Toli Ekadasi is the name given to the Ekadashi observed during the Shukla Paksha which is generally known as ‘waxing phase of moon’ in english. Toli Ekadasi is a auspicious festival celebrated in Ashada or Ashara Masam (June – July) by Telugu people and by Telugu speaking community around the world. According to telugu calendar, In 2016, the date of Toli Ekadashi is on July 15.
Toli Ekadasi is also known as Chatur Mas Vart (four holy months in Hinduism), Deva Sahayani Ekadasi or Hari Sayani Ekadasi begins from the day. On this day, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep at the night time of Devas.
One has to fast on this sacred day & break the fast on the Dwadashi day after commencing the pooja. By praying on Toli Ekadasi will help a person from redemption of his sins. One this day, One Should worship Lord Vishnu through pujas, prayers and mantras through entire day. Devotees can awake during the night by hearing religious speeches and performing Aartis.
Toli Ekadasi is very special to farmers, because on this day, they will sow seeds after the first rain on the festival day. Farmers will do their pooja on Toli Ekadasi with all their agriculture implements.
Ekadasi – What does it mean ?
Ekadasi is a Sanskrit word, which means ‘Eleven’. It means the 11th day of each half of the month in the Vedic lunar calendar. So there are 2 Ekadasi days in every month on the Vedic calendar, once during the waxing phase of the moon
(Shukla Paksha) and the other during the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha).

Ekadasi – What can I eat?
Ekadasi has been set for us to observe a fast to please ‘God’. One has to fast on Ekadasi by avoiding eating grains and beans, anything made from them or anything that has them in it. It means avoiding bread, pasta, lentils, rice, as well as beans and preparations made from bean flour.
The fast does not need to be extreme and you don’t have to starve yourself. Some of us may be able to offer a full fast as their Ekadasi sacrifice, avoiding all foods and drinking only water or juice, but not everyone can do this.
Sabundana Khichdi, made from sabudana, potatoes and ground nuts can be consumed but it should not contain onion and garlic. And obviously, alcohol, non-vegetarian food and sex should be avoided.
We should not overdo our fasting. We should only practice as much fasting as our capacity allows.
Ekadasi Importance and Significance :
We fast on Ekadasi in order to minimize the demands of the body so we can engage more of our time in the service of the Lord by chanting or performing some other devotional service. The best thing to do on these fasting days is to remember the pastimes of God and to hear His Holy name being sung and chanted.
The purpose of Ekadasi is to increase our love for God.
On the day of Ekadasi, we should plan to chant more rounds and read more devotional literature. If possible we should spend more time with devotees at the temple.
So as we can see Ekadasi is a time for us to step back from our normal routine and take stock of our spiritual lives. It is a time for us to increase our practice and to put a little more effort into our devotional service.

King Mandhata of Surya Dynasty was noble and honest and observed Ekadasi fasting with devotion, particularly ‘Sayana Ekadasi’ fasting. His kingdom had effected severe drought & many of animals were died. To get out this situation, king mandhata did sayana ekadasi fasting on toli ekadasi with much devotion & prayed lord vishnu. After that fasting he get rid of severe drought in his kingdom.
